Trudeau says taxing foreign online businesses would cost Canadians
He told reporters in Montreal today he won’t do anything that could cause Canadians to pay more for cellphone or Internet service.
Some have criticized the government for failing to take action in the 2018 budget to address what they say is an unlevel playing field.
Trudeau said the government understands that online cross-border commerce is increasing and that Statistics Canada has been given funding to study the issue.
But he insisted the government wouldn’t increase taxes on consumers by making them pay more for online service.
